Preaching in Paradise

Back to @leiabox's best documentary list I finally sat down with Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996). This is a long film but I think I never bothered because this case had received so much attention at the time I didn't feel I needed to watch it. But I'm glad I did even though it just made more upset at the incompetence and ignorance of all the people involved. 8 / 10

Went out for a big screen viewing of Priest (2011), which had been on my radar since the first trailers hit. It has all the hallmarks of what I like in silly, post-apocalyptic films, including Maggie Q. Sadly it's not very good yet good enough for my tastes. I would watch this again on Blu. 6 / 10

Scream For Me, Long Beach!

And like the upcoming Fast Five sequel, Scream 4 is nearing so I figured I might as well revisit the other films starting with Wes Craven's original Scream (1996), which I haven't seen since it was released on home video. Still a pretty damn fun film and everyone is so young. Aw. 7 / 10

Scream 2 (1997) didn't seem nearly as annoying as it was when I saw it in the theater w/my brother. Actually the first third is quite awesome. The middle drops and the end is just falls out. 6.5 / 10

Alien Amenábar

Don Dohler's The Alien Factor (1978) is so bad I have nearly no recollection of it. I just know that this is the first appearance of our favorite sheriff from Nightbeast, Sheriff Cinder (same aliens too which I first saw on the cover of Famous Monsters magazine! Now I know what the hell that was.). May have to revisit. 5.5/10

Tesis (1996) is the early film written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar and it's worth all the praise it receives. Really dig the snuff film storyline and the horror movie slant. This is the film that 8mm wanted to be. Just watch it. You can see all the early signs of greatness. Now he needs to make another film! 8/10

No Womb of the Emperor

From my library I grabbed The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) off the quick picks shelf figuring I was gonna watch this one sooner or later. Based on everything I've read & heard my expectations were suitably low but all things considered I actually found myself liking this installment of The Mummy franchise. Strange since this one is pegged as being the worst of the three but I really disliked the first two. Not sure what worked for me here since this one is ridiculous (Yeti-cats?!) but it was watchable and entertaining. Great to see Jet Li & Michelle Yeoh onscreen together again... was Twin Warriors (1993) the last (& only other) time these two shared the screen together?

Took in another in the "XX: utsukushiki" exploitation series with Takahito Hara's Beautiful Killing Machine (1996) mainly b/c these Asian Pulp Cinema titles are OOP and disappearing on Netflix. In this one Rei Natsume plays professional bodyguard Cheryl that is quite convincing kicking ass all over the yakuza. She (& her therapist Saiko Isshiki) are very appealing as a pretty unbelievable twist unravels by the end. Overall good watch.

Took @BTSjunkie's advice and queued up Inseminoid (aka Horror Planet) (1981) via NWI. This is a fun b-movie sci-fi horror thriller from the UK that never lets up. Not great by any means but damn fun.

When Real is Not a Reality

After office day, RJ, Francois & I walked over to CineArts to view the long anticipated Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Banksy. With everything I'd been hearing / reading about this documentary my expectations were at a fever pitch. Thankfully this film lived up to the hype, which is rare anymore. Malcolm (SmodCast) dubbed this a "revenge doc" which might be overstating it but this film is quite subversive not just in content. It's exhilarating and yet uncomfortable at times. I look forward to more viewings.

Continuing my 80s obsession I finished off the Ghoulies flipper with Ghoulies 2 (1988). This time the ghoulies get resurrected at a carnival funhouse (same funhouse later used in Dark Ride?). Think this one is on par w/the first film with a little more humor and more camp.

Lastly another Japanese crime thriller with Takashi Ishii's Gonin 2 (1996) starring Ken Ogata as a wizened badass seeking revenge for the death of his wife at the hands of yakuza. The "gonin" in the title are 5 disenchanted women that come together after a botched jewelry store robbery and also stand in the way of the yakuza. The first half is a little slow but everything after the robbery is good stuff. Kimiko Yo is excellent as the elder (40yrs old at the time) leader of this rag-tag bunch. Dug this film.

Masochist Mars Machinations

Ventured out to Muvico all-digital for the opening day of Iron Man 2 (2010). Really enjoyed the film and didn't have any problems I had read/heard about from the early screenings (pacing issues, flat 2nd act, etc.). Think it's a worthy sequel that serves up more of the same from the first film but doesn't overshadow it. My only quibble is with Mickey Rourke's character as I had a hard believing he could really do all the things he does. Make sense?

Evening viewing included Toshiharu Ikeda's sexploitation flick XX: utsukushiki emono a.k.a. Beautiful Prey (1996). Not really a pink film (too long) it's more on the exploitative side with a fucked up housewife's predilection for S&M and detectives caught up in the mystery surrounding her. Kei Marimura isn't gravure model attractive but possesses plenty of sex appeal to make her seductress work. Not a bad watch from Asian Pulp Cinema.

Catching up on my Franco Nero westerns, I pushed Keoma (1976) up my queue. Enzo Castellari installment in the Django legend is pretty good with a few spectacular shoot-out scenes. Wasn't fully absorbed in this as that damn soundtrack kept taking me out of the film. Didn't care much for the sub-plot w/the pregnant woman but at least this is one of the more unique spaghetti westerns akin to Peckinpah's work. Nero is outstanding.

Capped the night w/another fairly awful Asylum feature Princess of Mars (2009) via NWI. Guess they wanted to beat the major studios to the John Carter of Mars remake w/this clunker but both Traci Lords and Antonio Sabato Jr. look great in this. I like all the make-up designs and props but the story is pretty weak. This is one Asylum flick that actually could've been more good as there is a lot less cheese in this one.

Spies Like Us

Richard Burton in Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) is so damn good. Claire Bloom is also great. Wasn't so much into the intrigue aspect but really enjoyed the characters interacting. And the tone in b&w creates the mood.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island (2010) hit all the right notes for me. Helped that I wasn't expecting much going in even tho the storyline is far too predictable. But despite that I was along for the ride and ate it up. Would consider this one of Scorsese's better films in recent years and easily one of the best DiCaprio performances. I was so sleepy during the first hour but totally woke up in the second hour. Really enjoyable.

Man, I completely had the wrong idea about Big Night (1996) going into it. Thought it was going to be something entirely different and unfortunately wanted it to be something different. As it was, Tucci & Scott make a capable film about the struggle of small Italian restaurant and the relationship of the two brothers but I really wanted more focus on the food. Yes, there is the celebration of well-prepared dishes but not enough.

I'd Rather Be With An Animal

Another quick pick from the library, Role Models (2008), turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Shouldn't have been since I like both Paul Rudd & Seann William Scott quite a bit. Better than average comedy and re-watch worthy.

Recent talk of Frankenheimer led me to a complete watch of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). Such terrifying film that I never had the stomach to see the whole thing (yes, it's that terrifyingly awful plus I have a special fondness for the '77 version). Well, at least the make-up is good.

Last of the evening was an After Dark Horrorfest flick, Unearthed (2007). Not bad but a little tiresome of ALIEN motif. Very middling at best.
